Upon any hypothesis of special creation, facts of this kind appear to me to be entirely unaccountable and inexplicable, but they cease to be so if you accept Mr. The opening on the top of the bulb is made by melting on a bead of glass, expanding, bursting, and fusing the ragged edges. For such a small number of specimens the amount of variation is very large--from one-eighth to one-fifth of the mean size,--while there are an extraordinary number of instances of independent variability. When varied leaves are required, it is found that a number of plants vary sufficiently in this direction also, and we have zonal geraniums, variegated ivies, gold and silver marked hollies, and many others. At that time astronomers had already become accustomed to the discovery, year after year, of several asteroids, which are in reality planets, though small ones.
